This time of year can be unsettling for clubs as players whose contracts are up in the summer can talk to other clubs. All a manager can do is try to keep feet on the ground and minds on the game.

motherwellMotherwell manager Jim Gannon was not pleased when Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee announced his interest in winger Jim O'Brien a while ago. Now that the Dons have asked for permission to open pre-contract talks with O'Brien, the Motherwell manager has advised O'Brien to concentrate on his game and let others worry about any contract discussions. McGhee brought O'Brien to Fir Park from Celtic at the start of last season so is obviously a fan.  The winger's deal ends at the same time as the season does and was left out squad which lost 3-2 to Celtic on Saturday following the Aberdeen approach. Gannon accepts O'Brien's right to sort out his long-term future but has urged him to make sure it does not affect his game.

Gannon said: "That's part of the process of football, the laws are there. It's important that players have the scope to be able to secure their long-term futures, either at their own clubs or other clubs. I think the most important thing is it doesn't distract Jim from what he's trying to achieve day to day. He's a young man and he just needs to let the agent deal with any contract issues and just get on with playing. That would be my advice to Jim and it has been my advice to Jim."
