European Carrot Attracts Interest

While Falkirk consider the applications for their vacancy, can they take a chance with an untried manager for their first steps into Europe?
The Falkirk manager's job is still available and despite the Motherwell job becoming vacant as well is attracting interest from those with some inside knowledge of the club. The prospect of managing a side taking their first foray into Europe, in their new sky blue Euro strip, has encouraged Steven Pressley, Eddie May, who heads the club's youth development programme, Falkirk veterans Jackie McNamara and Neil McCann as a partnership to offer their services. It is understood that former Dundee boss Alex Rae has also been considering his position. Pressley and May have emerged as the leading contenders to take over from John Hughes, possibly as a partnership. The Scotland assistant coach expressed his desire to become a manager when he announced his retirement earlier this month following his five-month playing spell at Falkirk. Pressley said: "It's a fantastic club, a fantastic infrastructure. I am very interested in the job. But I have to show Falkirk the respect. They have been going about their appointment in the right manner. I am heading for Sweden and return next weekend, so if an appointment is made before then, you will know it is not me."
Dundee United assistant manager Peter Houston has also admitted he would consider the job, but he has not applied. The former Bairn said: "It is on record that at one time I said that I would love to go back to Falkirk. When you spend 12 or 13 years there as a player and actually worked there as a coach for a wee while, if there is one job that might have interested me, it might have been the Falkirk one. You can sit in the comfort zone for a long, long time and there's always that thought about can you do it, but I am not the type of person to chase the job as I have a great job with Craig Levein." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
