Prevented from playing for Scotland, due to a gentleman's agreement, Andy Driver has forced his was into Stuart Pearce's England Under 21 squad.
| Andy Driver has been named in the England Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championships in Sweden. Head coach Stuart Pearce watched him in action earlier this season and has finally picked the winger for the under-21s. He is joined by fellow new boy West Ham's James Tomkins as the only new faces in a 23-man squad, which includes established Premier League players such as Gabriel Agbonlahor, Joe Hart, James Milner and Theo Walcott. Pearce said: "We have a couple of new faces in the squad this time around,. Andrew has benefited from Aaron Lennon's injury in a way and has come off a good season with Hearts. He will provide us with natural width which is something we needed in the squad alongside the likes of Adam Johnson and James Milner." Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo is confident Driver will be fit to join the squad after a nerve problem prevented him from playing in the last three games of the league season. Laszlo said: "Driver is going for treatment every day and we hope he will be okay. At the moment he has good development but we don't like to push a player in a situation where he could be injured. We don't want to bring him into a risk situation." England leave for their Spanish training camp next week before a final warm-up friendly against Azerbaijan on Monday, 8 June in Milton Keynes. Next month they will join up with the other European Championship Group B countries of Spain and Germany and the campaign starts against Finland in the Swedish town of Halmstad on 15 June. | |
