After dropping out of the domestic cups at the hands of Celtic and Raith Rovers in recent weeks, a return to Championship duty on Friday night did not change their fortunes as Hibs claimed a 2-0 win at Ibrox. The result means Alan Stubb's side leapfrog Rangers in the standings, although last night's home side have games in hand, and a more spirited display gave McDowall fresh hope.  He said: "We showed great determination and passion. The players have been knocked but, to a man, I thought they were fantastic. Tonight they gave everything. They left it all on the pitch. We just can't get the ball over the line at the moment."

Hibs manager Stubbs watched his side record a third league win over the Glasgow side this season and was heartened by the fact that they came through their latest test with flying colours.  He said: "We showed a different side to us and showed a real steeliness. Rangers knocked us off our stride but what we always have is goals in the team. I'd like to finish top but it's Hearts' to lose. Do I think we can finish second? Yes, but it's a big ask. If we keep getting results like this is gives us a good chance."
