Pre-season training can have an added edge if there is a prize at the end of it.

The Keyline Cup has been won by Alloa in two of the last three years and manager Allan Maitland is taking his first team squad to Oban on Saturday to defend their title. Alloa will be joined by Scottish Cup winners Dundee United as well as the youth teams of Hamilton Accies, St Johnstone and Hearts to take part in the round robin tournament that also features local amateur side Oban Saints, who were recently crowned Scottish Champions.

The trip is more than just about silverware as Maitland explained: “It is a great tournament for building fitness with five short intense games but it is also a great time for the players to bond. We have changed our squad quite dramatically and we will stay up at Oban for the boys to get to know each other better and to do some training on the Sunday as well.”
