Competitive Action

Kilmarnock have no plans to adjust their approach to games despite less than complimentary comments on their style from last week.
Kilmarnock meet Rangers on Sunday and plan to show the same commitment as they did against Celtic in the CIS Cup. Manager Jim Jefferies felt his players were unfairly criticised for their efforts to harry Celtic last week. A number of comments emanating from Parkhead complained that Kilmarnock tried to kick Shunsuke Nakamura off the pitch during a 3-1 win for the SPL leaders. Jefferies and his backroom staff have strongly refuted the allegations, but he knows his players will have to cope with similar complaints if they play the same way against Rangers at Rugby Park. Genial Jefferies said: "We did nothing wrong in the Celtic game, we weren't going about kicking lumps out of anybody. We competed well enough, we managed to let one or two people know they were in tackles. It was done fairly, no-one was sent off. I'm glad to hear the comments to be honest, because we said 'We can't sit off them or they will destroy us because they have better players than us'. At least the other manager knows we did that. Our supporters like to see us get stuck in and we certainly did that day, but we did it fair."
Gary Caldwell, whose foul on David Fernandez led to a serious injury for the Spaniard in another Rugby Park game, was among a number of Celtic players to speak out against Killie's competitive approach to the game. But Jefferies has urged his players not to dilute their commitment in the wake of the comments. He went on: "Kilmarnock as a football club didn't come out and shout about the challenge that put David Fernandez out. We're aware these things happen in football, people compete. We lost our top player for 18 months. I hope my players put the same competitive edge to every game we play."
In-form defender Frazer Wright is in line for a surprise comeback on Sunday despite pulling a calf muscle against Celtic. Speaking yesterday, Jefferies said: "Frazer Wright has a good chance. He trained a little bit this morning. With the game being Sunday and if he does a little bit more tomorrow with no reaction, he could possibly be back in contention for the weekend." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
