City Have Mountain To Climb

Ahead of the second leg of their Champion's league last 16 tie against Turbine Potsdam, Glasgow City will have an open training session this Wednesday at Petershill. The actual game will be played the next day,  Thursday at Petershill Park with a 6.05pm kick-off.  This is the first time a Scottish women’s team has ever reached the last 16 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League and also the first time a team the quality and stature of Turbine Potsdam have ever played on Scottish soil. The first leg in Postdam did not go City's way with the women being on the end of a 10-0 thrashing last week. This is not the kind of result City are used to to as they have just finished off their league programme as champions with a 100% record of 20 league wins out of a possible 20. They will be contesting the Henson Projects Scottish Cup against Hibernian at Toryglen on Sunday. This sort of form suggests they are no pushover.

Speaking ahead of the game, City club manager, Laura Montgomery said: "We face a massive task on Thursday against one of the finest teams in the world. If ever there was a David v Goliath, this is it. As our girls are unpaid and have full-time jobs and studies, Potsdam represent what can be achieved in women’s football, as they can attract the best players from all around the world to play fully professional football in the best League in Europe. Potsdam play in front of weekly crowds of 7,000 and this is what we can only dream of in Scotland for our own game. We must look to teams like this as the bench mark and it is no surprise that they have won the Champions League twice in the last five years and were beaten finalists in 2011. They are of course favourites to pick up the trophy this season again and we would like Glasgow and Scotland to come out and get behind our own girls ahead of the biggest women’s football club match ever to be witnessed in Scotland. Anyone who came to our last Champions League game thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and we hope to see the same if not even greater numbers than before, to spur our girls on to a great performance".
