Charlie Is The Darling

Black and White publishing appear to have the monopoly of publishing books by players and officials associated with Rangers. The latest tomb available for all your Rangers supporting friends is 'Charlie Miller, The Proper Charlie, my Autobiography', co-written with Scott McDermott, sports reporter with the Daily Record and Sunday Mail. Miller was at the centre of the Rangers team which under Walter Smith secured nine league titles in a row. He played and socialised with the likes of Ally McCoist, Paul Gascoigne, Mark Hateley and Brian Laudrup. He must have felt that things would always allow him to be part of the Scottish football elite.

A huge change from his start in life in Castlemilk where the gang culture appeared glamorous and tempting to the young Miller. However, moving to Rangers allowed him to leave that dangerous path and play at the highest level. This was not to last and the distractions of drink, drugs and gambling all played their part in diminishing Miller's value as a player. Miller does not shirk from telling it like it was and how his career path took him from from Rangers, to Leicester City (on loan), Watford, Dundee United, SK Brann, Lierse, Brisbane Roar, Gold Coast United and Clyde. Not the expected path when at the height of his playing powers but one he faced up to before heading home to Castlemilk. Miller is not bitter about how things have worked out. Many have not been so lucky and he accepts that everything was his choice. He appears content with his lot and enjoying his time with his family. Would that everybody could say the same.

'Charlie Miller, The Proper Charlie, My Autobiography' by Charlie Miller with Scott McDermott is published tomorrow, 20 November by Black and White Publishing, ISBN 978-1-84502-827-5 and is priced £9.99.
