Can the others keep the challenge beyond Christmas?

Finally it’s arrived, the re-arranged match between Dundee United and Rangers. The first match as we all know with Rangers leading 1-0 was abandoned at half time due to hazardous conditions created by the torrential rain. (And would you believe it, everyone agreed with the ref’s decision, now that’s a rarity these days).

Since then nobody from either club have been able to agree on anything. The main talking point of course has been the ticket debacle created when the United chairman decided to charge paying fans entry to the re-scheduled game.

My opinion is, as would happen in other public entertainment events, is that people who have bought tickets for an original event, concert etc. which had to be cancelled, postponed abandoned whatever, would be allowed into the re-scheduled event free on production of the original ticket.

However, that is not going to happen as United say that it will cost them upwards of £25,000 to stage the match, too much for them to afford in the present economic climate. So they need to recoup some of the expense by letting fans in for half price.

That is all history now, so on to tonight’s match. Rangers will go top of the SPL with a win over the Arabs and United who lost ground with a draw on Saturday against Hearts will creep to within a point of the Gers if they come out on top. Hibernian also slipped up at the weekend with a draw against Kilmarnock.

Celtic and Rangers just look to be settling in now and results are beginning to go their way. In previous seasons it appears to be the case that the chasing clubs fall away from the challenge around this time of year similar to the Old Firm’s demise in Europe.

rangers jpegThe dominance of Celtic and Rangers in the domestic game doesn’t look like faltering for some years yet. ( There is still too much of a gap between them and the rest). With that in mind it might be an idea to present the club finishing third in the SPL with a trophy, it might be called ‘The also-rans cup’ because let’s face up to facts and that is, the dominance of the two clubs will never be ‘seriously’ challenged for the foreseeable future. Therefore, whoever gets third place at the end of the season has beaten the rest of the pack and should be rewarded for their endeavour.

It’s up to United to keep that challenge alive with a win over Rangers tonight
.
