Boyd Still Knows Where The Goal Is

While Rangers are fighting to survive, one of their recent signing targets must be glad he made the decision to head to North America rather than return to Glasgow. Scotland international Kris Boyd signed for Portland Timbers instead of re-signing for the Ibrox club and he made an electrifying start to his American career. Just seven minutes into the pre-season friendly with AIK Stockholm, he headed in his American opener and the game''s only goal. The cross was provided by Colombian forward Jorge Perlaza. Clearly Boyd is not really match fit and left the field early to tumultuous applause. His compatriot John Spencer, another ex Ranger, is already a firm fan favourite in Portland.

This season promises to be a battle between big strikers in MLS. To the north, Seattle has former Fulham striker Eddie Johnson, and in Vancouver, two Frenchmen, Eric Hassli and Seb Le Toux will try and outscore Boyd. However, the biggest draw is still Robbie Keane down in LA who is joined by Edson Buddle returning after a spell in Germany.

Portland are however not the ''Scottish team''. Vancouver''s head coach is Thurso born Martin Rennie, his assistant Kirkcaldy''s Paul Ritchie played for both Hearts and Dundee United, and another former United star, Barry Robson is set to join in June. To add further Celtic flavour, Welshman Carl Robinson is his assistant.

Boyd''s next game is the MLS Opener against Philadelphia Union on 12 March.
