Tenth take on ninth today at Fir Park and could swap places by the end of the day.
Motherwell manager Mark McGhee will assess his squad's fitness following Thursday's UEFA Cup exit as he gets ready for the visit of Falkirk. Stephen Hughes (knee) and Stephen Craigan (groin) managed to overcame minor injuries to play in the 2-0 defeat by Nancy and both are likely to make today's squad. Motherwell midfielder Steven McGarry believes the Steelmen can soon take advantage of the tight league, by rediscovering their flowing football. McGarry is desperate to see his side move up the table and have collected seven points from seven games, but last weekend's win over St Mirren was the first of a run of five games against teams who finished outside the top six last season. McGarry feels they may not be far away from hitting the kind of form that took them to third place last season. the former St Mirren player said: "We have not been playing particularly badly, but just not as free-flowing as last year. Sometimes it just needs a light tinkering by the manager or a new formation - so we hope we can get it right on Sunday."
Falkirk manager John Hughes can count on Russell Latapy (ankle) and Arnau Riera (knee) today as they have returned to fitness. The midfield duo have been added to the squad which best Hamilton 4-1 last weekend to move off the foot of the SPL table. However, the Bairns will still be without defenders Dean Holden (leg) and Brian Allison (foot), as well as striker Carl Finnigan (virus). Latapy has tipped team-mate Scott Arfield to keep getting better and better, after adding a new dimension to his game this season. Arfield has stepped impressively into the shoes of the injured Latapy this term and showcased his improvement when he netted an impressive double in last weekend game. The youngster has been urged by manager Hughes to find his scoring touch - and with three goals already to his name, he has matched last term's total for the entire campaign. Player-coach Latapy believes the 19-year-old can only improve with experience.
He said: "He's at the stage in his career where he needs to put more goals into his game. I would like to see him getting forward more and putting it into the net. Last season he was getting forward and getting into good areas and at times not hitting the target, or hitting it off the goalkeeper. But the good thing about Scott is he is only going to get better with games. One of his attributes is he wants to work hard and learn, and he is a good listener. The more games he gets, the better he is going to get. I would think we are going to have a better player towards the end of the season and next season than we had last season." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba.net)
