| St Mirren have finally recorded a league win at New St Mirren Park. |
Craig Dargo is not big headed enough to take all the credit for St Mirren securing their long-awaited first league win at their new stadium. He scored the superb winner against Hearts on Saturday after Steven Thomson had cancelled out Jose Goncalves' opener as Saints staged an impressive comeback. The Buddies moved to new St Mirren Park in January this year but in 11 previous attempts before Saturday they had failed to record a league win at home. They knew the pressure was building to deliver in front of their increasingly frustrated fans. It was Dargo who proved to be the difference between the two sides with a goal that manager Gus MacPherson described as "fit to win any game". However, Dargo was keen to play down his part in the win.
He said: "I wouldn't say it was my best goal. I'm just happy to be off the mark. It was a good team performance from everyone and I think that counts more than the goal. The goal was a bonus. It didn't matter who got the goal, we were just looking to get the win at the new ground and now that we've done that hopefully we can build on it. Getting the three points was the most important thing. It's been coming, we've been unlucky here a few times. There has been a lot made about us not having our first win at our new stadium and it's pleasing to have the monkey off our back."
Saints' home hoodoo had been well-publicised but Dargo insists the players were unaffected. The striker said: "It's not been playing on our minds. We are confident enough and we know we have been unlucky. Hopefully we can put a run together now and get as many points on the board as possible." Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo was furious with the result and told his players in no uncertain terms that their efforts simply were not good enough. He said: " This game was very easy to win. When you go on the field, the most important thing is to score goals and not give the opponents chances to score. I am very angry with some of the players. The opponents didn't have the best day but they have the three points. We play for our club, for the supporters and we must have responsibilities. This is not okay. I don't attack anybody but today I am completely angry about not taking chances." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
