It was a disappointing first half from City's point of view after an assured performance at the same venue in the Cup only two weeks ago. Both sides struggled to carve out any real chances in the box in the opening exchanges with all efforts coming from distance. For City, Abbi Grant had three efforts all from around the edge of the area either held by Rebecca Flaherty in the Dons nets or just wide of target. Courtney Whyte had a shot from 25 yards which skimmed the cross bar as City pushed for an opening, and Clare Shine, an early substitute for the injured Julie Fleeting rounded Flaherty but the angle was too tight to produce the finish. The Dons only chances from the opening half came from Cheryl Anderson and Hannah Stewart strikes from distance which were both off target as the two teams went in 0-0 at half time.
The second 45 minutes was a different affair as City camped themselves in the Dons half as they pushed hard for an opener. The half time introduction of Denise O'Sullivan added a real impetus to City as the Irish midfielder helped drive her team forward. Shine had the ball in the back of the net on 64 minutes after a cross from Lauren McMurchie, but the offside flag was up, which frustratingly for the visitors is shown to be clearly onside from video replay. Eventually City's constant pressure paid off and they took the lead the on 77 minutes. Shine took the ball at the edge of the box, played a one two with Abbi Grant and fired well past Flaherty to give her side the three points.
Commenting on the game, City manager Scott Booth said: "The first half we weren't at it at all, nowhere near it and we really let ourselves down, which is no disrespect to Aberdeen as I thought they set themselves up very well, were well organised and drilled and learned from our previous visit here two weeks ago. But if we don't start the game with the right tempo, aggression and hunger then teams will make it difficult for us. In the second half we had a much better performance and tempo. But it is difficult, we cannot just turn that on, we have to remain very consistent and that is not just about getting wins but also in our performances. But I was pleased with the second half, the way we played and the chances we created and it was a good three points."
City are back in action next Sunday at home to Rangers at the Excelsior Stadium, 2.30pm. Entry is £5 adults and Under 16's go free.
